Happy BLUE Year: Swimmers brave the chill to herald 2011 with traditional dip in icy waters

Swimmers braved icy seas yesterday for an annual New Year’s Day dip.
Among the intrepid bathers near the Forth Bridge in Edinburgh, at Whitley Bay, North Tyneside and Scarborough, North Yorkshire, were revellers in Spiderman, viking, sailor and Santa outfits.
A few brave souls even stripped down to just bikinis in the chilly water.

Across the North Sea, thousands of Dutch men and women donned little else but hats bearing the national colour of orange as they frolicked in the sea at Scheveningen near capital The Hague.
Members of the Berlin Seals also braved sub-zero temperatures as they took dips in a clearing of the frozen Oranke lake.
