HONEY is being hailed as a new hangover cure, with scientists claiming the natural sweetener helps break down alcohol.
Scientists from Britain's Royal Society of Chemistry claimed that the fructose in honey is an essential compound that helps the body break down alcohol into harmless by-products, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
Dr John Emsley said that hangovers are caused by alcohol breaking down into the toxic substance acetaldehyde.

The body can then use fructose to convert the compound into acetic acid, which is burned up naturally by the body.
Putting honey on toast could be even more effective because it adds potassium and sodium, which also help process alcohol.
Dr Emsley, author of the Consumer’s Good Chemical Guide, told the Telegraph that time was the best way to cure a hangover but there were ways of minimising it.

He said that drinking a glass of milk first, sticking to clear alcohols such as gin and mixing in the occasional soft drink were just as helpful as was sinking a glass of water before you go to bed.
Dr Emsley added that hair of the dog cure only worked when a person drank so much alcohol that they suffered withdrawal symptoms.
